Thumb Sticks for Autumn Walks


As we progress into Autumn the weather will be getting a bit cooler, but as we progress through August many of us in the UK will want to take advantage of the change in the season, and take to the great outdoors at the weekends to enjoy relaxing walks the relaxing autumnal weather.

Whatever your age, and whether or not you're an experienced rambler, or occasional walker, it's great to get out and about and enjoy some outdoor pursuits at the weekend and holidays. So today I thought we would look at some sticks that would be ideal companions for those of you who enjoy rambling in the countryside or a gentle walk with the family.

Today I thought we'd take a closer look at our more rustic Country sticks that we have available at the Stick and Cane Shop, particularly our Thumb Sticks. The rustic walking stick is an essential accessory in the British countryside. Indeed, no rural walk is complete without a stick for support, especially on uneven terrain. We have a delightful range of styles available to suit a range of budgets.

The Thumb Stick itself is a very comfortable stick to use, and the 'v' shape notch at the top provides an ideal gripping point for the thumb to provide balance and comfort whilst walking. Each of these sticks is unique and individually crafted. And so, each stick will provide the user give you many years of use on those relaxing country walks.

Chestnut Thumb Stick


Our lovely Chestnut Thumb Stick is the least expensive of our selection, so provides an ideal 'entry level' Thumb Stick for those of you looking for a bit of extra stability whilst out walking this season. The thumb stick is so called because it is held with the thumb resting in the natural V of a branch. Made from natural chestnut, this thumb stick is beautifully finished for a comfortable, natural look and feel.

The dimensions of the walking stick are:
  • Length is 137cm
  • Weight is 422g
  • The stick diameter at the top just under the handle is aprox 24mm and tapers down to 19mm at the ferrule end
  • It is fitted with a removable rubber ferrule and a metal point 

Blackthorn Thumb Stick



Newly back in stock at the Stick and Cane Shop is the delightful Blackthorn Thumb Stick. This lovely stick is a mid-range priced thumb stick, and whether it is to be used for extra stability on a rural walk or as an ideal accessory in the Autumn fair beer tent, long sticks are practical companions for all. The thumb stick is so called because it is held with the thumb resting in the natural "V" of a branch. Made from natural Blackthorn giving a very straight yet knobbly texture.

The dimensions of the walking stick are:
  • Length is 137cm
  • Weight is 425g
  • The stick diameter at the top just under the handle is aprox 27mm and tapers down to 26mm at the ferrule end
  • It is fitted with a combi spike/ferrule

Staghorn Thumbstick on Blackthorn Shaft



Representing the upper-price range in our Thumb Stick collection is the beautifully crafted Staghorn Thumbstick on a Blackthorn Shaft. This thumbstick will make a wonderful companion on long walks and will provide the used with years of good walking! Each one is entirely unique and would make a wonderful gift. The thumb stick is so called because it is held with the thumb resting in the V of the antler. Shaft made from natural blackthorn, fitted with a steel ferrule.

The dimensions of the thumbstick are:
  • Length is aprox 135cm
  • Weight is 585g
  • The stick diameter at the top just under the handle is aprox 28mm and tapers down to 22mm at the ferrule end
  • It is fitted with a metal ferrule
