Gift Ideas for Christmas - Thumb Sticks for Countryside Walks

Now that the decorations are hanging from most town centres, and not forgetting the first airing of the now-obligatory start to the festive season - the John Lewis ad, the countdown to Christmas truly has begun! And with only around 40-odd shopping days left until Christmas (yes, you read that correctly!), much of our attention is turning to gift shopping and present buying for the big day!

Lots of us want to get that unique gift that our loved ones will love, and one that we are sure that will get used all year round, not just one that ends up being left forgotten at the turn of the new year. So this week we thought we would shine a light on some new sticks that have just appeared at the Stick & Cane Shop this past week.

Ideal for people who enjoy walking in the British countryside, or for those who love rambling or occasional walkers taking their dogs for a walk, our Thumb Sticks make an ideal choice of gift for Christmas. We have added three new styles to our already wide range of gorgeous Thumb Sticks in our even wider range of Country Walking Sticks. In an assortment of different types of wood, with different natural finishes, with some featuring antlers for the thumb rest, these thumb sticks make an ideal walking companion for long weekend walks, or short evening strolls. These even make superb additions to anyone's walking stick collection for those avid stick collectors out there too!

So let's take a closer look at these beautiful new walking sticks, and let us help offer you a bit of gift-shopping inspiration this festive season!

Antler Thumbstick on Unique Natural Long Spiral Shaft

This Antler Thumbstick on a unique natural spiral shaft is an eye-catching, beautifully made stick, with a total length of 141cm. Produced in small quantities and to the highest standard of workmanship. No two sticks are exactly the same as the spirals are formed by climbing plants tightly gripping the wood as it grows. A wonderful and unique gift for a loved one this Christmas!

The dimensions of the walking stick are:
  • Length is 141cm
  • Length from bottom to thumb-rest is 137cm
  • Weight is 600g
  • The average stick diameter is 27mm tapering gradually to 20cm at the ferrule end
  • It is fitted with a rubber ferrule

Quickthorn Thumbstick

Another thumbstick that would make someone an excellent gift this festive season is the Quickthorn Thumbstick. This cane is made from quickthorn (another name for Hawthorn) and makes an excellent and practical companion when out walking in the countryside, or even around town. The thumbstick is so called because it is held with the thumb resting in the natural "V" of a branch. Made from natural quickthorn, giving a lovely brown & silvery natural finish.

The dimensions of the thumbstick are:
  • Total Length is 120cm
  • Length from ground to thumb rest is 113.5cm
  • Weight is 390g
  • Stick diameter at the top just under the handle is aprox 24mm and undulates gradually to 25mm at the ferrule end
  • It is fitted with a rubber ferrule

Chestnut Thumbstick with Natural Spiral Shaft

Finally, another new addition to our collection this week is the stylish Chestnut Thumbstick with Natural Spiral Shaft. Whether it is used for balance on a rural walk or as a walking companion while walking the dog on rough terrain, long sticks are practical companions for all. The thumbstick is so called because it is held with the thumb resting in the natural "V" of a branch. Made from natural chestnut giving a very smooth brown, delicate texture. Features natural spiral grooves on the lower portion of the stick.

The dimensions of the thumbstick are:
  • Total Length is 134cm
  • Length from ground to thumb rest is 129cm
  • Weight is 385g
  • Stick diameter at the top just under the handle is aprox 24mm and tapers down to 20mm at the ferrule end
  • It is fitted with a rubber ferrule
