Pull up a stick (…and have a sit down)

For those with mobility difficulties it is sometimes necessary to have a rest when walking any distance. This is usually not a problem in the house where there are typically chairs or seats in most rooms of the house, and the distances you need to walk are usually fairly short. However, when you are out and about, finding a seat, or just somewhere to take the strain off your legs, can be very difficult.

So, in this week’s blog post from the Stick and Cane Shop, we thought we’d have a wee look at some of the fantastic seat-sticks that we have available in our store. These typically come in two forms. The first is the traditional ‘shooting stick‘ that was originally used for huntsmen outdoors. It provides a single pole with a seat function which give the user a handy place to sit and rest, while still remaining very portable as a stick. The second type is the fold down tripod seat. In one position it functions perfectly as a stick, but when folded down it provides an excellent temporary seat, which has three prongs for extra stability. We at the Stick and Cane shop know that our lovely customers are a diverse bunch. Some of you have life-long mobility difficulties, while some of you are avid countryside ramblers. At the Stick and Cane Shop we have a wide variety of all different ranges of sticks and canes, so for the first-time-visitor it can seem like an overwhelming selection from which to choose your ideal stick. Improve your stability in icy conditions

Cold WeatherVast swathes of Europe seem to be undergoing a deep freeze at the moment. The past few days have seen very cold weather descend over central and eastern Europe, and we in the UK have definitely noticed it getting much colder and frosty over the past few days too.

In these conditions it is can be difficult for most people walking about town, but for many with mobility difficulties, icy weather can be treacherous. So today I thought we’d look at some of the mobility aids that we have available at the Stick and Cane Shop, to aid stability in colder weather, and to make walking outside a less worrying prospect.

Walking Stick Accessories - Rubber FerrulesA first point to ask, is: how long has it been since you last changed the rubber ferrule on the end of your stick? Just like car tyres, these tips can wear down over time, eroding the grips at the end and making them much more prone to slippage, even on the driest of days! If the ferrule has lost (or is nearly losing) any of the patterned grips at the end, then it’s perhaps time that you changed the ferrule. For extra stability, and grip, try choosing a ferrule with a larger base – the larger surface area in contact with the ground will provide better security and grip in most types of weather. Ice Cane Attachment For particularly frosty conditions, you may want to consider another invaluable accessory, which is the Ice Cane Attachment. The Ice Cane Attachment fits on the end of your walking stick over the ferrule to give extra grip in icy conditions and to help prevent your stick sliding on ice or snow. Anatomical Walking Sticks

We are all aware of the usual handles for walking sticks, be they the traditional crook, or the straight-handle. However for many people, particularly those who use them a lot, the pressure these handles place on the hand, and thereby the arm and its joints, can be quite painful. Nevertheless, there are solutions to this problem, in particular, anatomically-handled walking sticks.

This type of stick is designed to suit particular orthopaedic requirements, bringing great benefits and comfort to its users. Anatomically handled canes are shaped to be suitable for smaller hands, ergonomic to use – contouring to the shape of the hand, and are available in right- and left-hand models. The handles may look rather unusual at first, but when held correctly the benefit of their contoured shapes is felt.

So if you find that your current stick is causing discomfort on the hand, or that your arm is painful after use, it might be worth investing in an Anatomical Walking Stick. New Year/New You?

Now that 2012 is well-and-truly in full swing, we know that many of you will have made new year’s resolutions. We do hope that what ever those are that you are sticking to them and keeping the motivation going!  For me, as an avid hillwalker, it was to get out walking more, and thanks to the relatively mild winter we’ve had so far, it has been much more easy than it was last year. With all this walking in mind, I thought it would be good to look at some of the trekking and hiking poles that we have in stock at the Stick and Cane Shop.
