The Extra Long Forest Stewardship Countil (FSC) Ash Knob Stick is a beautiful stick to use and own. The timber in this product comes from well-managed forests, independently certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council.

The Ash Knob Stick is created by first removing the bark (reduced) and then scorching it to bring out and highlight the wood’s natural grain. It is then finally polished to a stunning lustre.

This stick is a natural product an will vary in size and shape of knob handle and lightness or darkness of grain.

Hazel Coppice Knob Stick – Stout

NEW Shop Opening!

Well, it’s all very exciting here at the Stick and Cane Shop. We are getting ready for our new shop opening for this weekend. If you missed last week’s big news, our new shop opens on Saturday 5th May, 2012 at Almondell Garden Centre, Raw Farm, East Calder EH53 0ET (See Map Below) Our store will be combining our fabulous stock from both the Stick and Cane Shop (www.stickandcaneshop.co.uk) and Umbrella Boutique (www.umbrellaboutique.co.uk) in to the one physical store, so that our customers have a place to visit, and to try out our lovely goods before they buy.

We will still be continuing to sell online too, so it is very much business as usual for our online stores. Additionally, Brolliesgalore (www.brolliesgalore.co.uk) will continue as our online umbrella venture. Therefore nothing is changing on the web side-of-things, we just felt it was time to expand, offering a chance for our customers to visit a physical store to interact with our beautiful goods!

We have covered our hiking sticks in previous blogs, but I thought we’d take a closer look at our more rustic sticks that we have available at the Stick and Cane Shop. The rustic walking stick is an essential accessory in the British countryside. Indeed, no rural walk is complete without a stick for support and company, and the styles we have available have a long history of popularity.

Our stag or deer horn handled thumb sticks have a tradition that goes back centuries in the British Isles.  The horns are shed annually and these are collected by gamekeepers which are then sold for stick handles and various other products. The horn is ground, sanded and polished before being fitted to a natural wooden shaft. The ‘v’ shape provides an ideal gripping point for the thumb to aid balance and comfort whilst walking.

The hiking staves provide a simple, yet beautifully crafted, stick that will give you many years of comfort and companionship on your country walks. These are made from natural wood that has been stripped and lacquered. All of these staves are harvested from sustainable forests assuring you of an environmentally friendly provenance.

None of these walks will be too severe, and will be achievable in an hour or two. They will therefore be ideal for a family day out rambling or a nice idea for a summer picnic, and a great reason to get out those hiking poles you’ve bought and put them to good use!

Arthur’s Seat & Holyrood Park

For the first walk, we thought we’d start with a superb walk that’s easily accessible in Scotland’s capital city. Arthur’s Seat is the main peak of the group of hills which form most of Holyrood Park, described by Robert Louis Stevenson as “a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design”. It is situated in the centre of the city of Edinburgh, about a mile to the east of Edinburgh Castle. The hill rises above the city to a height of 250.5 m (822 ft), provides excellent panoramic views of the city, is relatively easy to climb, and is popular for hillwalking.

For this walk, we suggest two different routes, which vary according to the length of time you have available, and the difficulty of the route. The first, following the blue line in the map provided is described below.

Blue Route – Arthur’s Seat & Holyrood Park

A to B – Starting at Queens Park, just south-west of the Scottish Parliament building, cross the road and follow the tarmac pavement. As you ascend this slope, St Margaret’s loch in the west will come in to view. The track will turn right and fork in front of you. Take the left-hand side route and it will take you in to a large grassy valley called Long Row or Dry Dam. You will see the ruins of St Anthony’s Chapel ahead of you on Whinny Hill. Turn right at A and you will see the ascent through Long Row ahead of you and follow the path up to point B.

At point B you either have the choice of ascending the large-well trodden and rocky path up to the summit of Arthur’s Seat (C), however if you do not have a head for heights, or do not feel comfortable following this steep incline, take the slope down to Dunsapie Loch in the west at point D. You will then meet up with the circular road that circumscribes Holyrood Park.

From Point D, follow the road until you reach the Car Park to the right of the road. Towards the right-hand corner of the car park there is an opening which takes you along a path which skirts the hill on the left-hand side. Follow the path until you reach a fork and take the right-hand path down towards a wall, turn right and walk down the steps to the road at point E.

From E turn right and follow the path along the north-side of Duddingston Loch, following the path around the tall sculpture-like basalt columns of Samson’s Ribs to your right (F) and follow the path up to point G.

From G follow the well-worn path up and around the base of Salisbury Crags, ascend to the point where the crags almost meet at a right-angle. Here you get a fantastic panoramic view of all of Edinburgh – from the north where you can see the Forth and Leith, to the South with views over the Pentlands. Follow the path north to take you back to point A.

Pink Route – Holyrood Park & Salisbury Crags

This path is somewhat easier and shorter than the one described above. From the Starting Point A, follow the path over Hunter’s Bog rather than to St Anthony’s Chapel, and you will follow a shallow grassy incline that cross-cuts the park to point G. From Point G, follow the same description above, back around Salisbury Crags to point A. This should take about an hour/an hour and a half at a relaxed pace.
